D.Summerville Memorial Race Facts Found 1) Black Prince elected to Request Redress from the Race Committee because the Lake Mark was out of position rather than protesting Dynamo for not sailing the course. 2) The Lake Mark was 1.40 miles west and 0.67 miles south of the position specified in the sailing instructions. 3) Dynamo, the lead boat, arrived at the designated position considerably ahead of the rest of the fleet. She radioed the Race Committee that the mark was not in its correct position and could not be seen from their position. Dynamo rounded the specified point and sailed to the finish, 4) When the following group of boats approached the designated position several yachts also attempted to contact the R.C. but were unsuccessful due to the continuous use of Channel 9 by the RCYC Race Committees. When it became obvious that the R.C. was not answering, the Mark Set boat advised the competitors that the mark was to the west of them. All other boats then sailed to the mark, rounded it and sailed to the finish. |
| Conclusions 1) Many yachts were affected by the failure of the R.C. to set the mark in the correct position. 2) The leading yachts were affected more than the trailing yachts. 3) The Jury is unable to find an equitable solution for all boats. 4) It would be unfair to score Dynamo on her elapsed time as she sailed a considerably shorter course than the other yachts. |
| Decisions 1) The IMS Fleets excluding Dynamo will be re-scored using the correct distance. 2) Dynamo will be awarded a first place in IMS I and a tie for second place in fleet based on her average corrected speed vies a vie the other boats in the fleet. |
