Welcome to the Fall Winds!

As most of you know the best time to race on Lake Ontario is in the Fall.  The water is still warm and the winds are usually reliable.  The LORC Frostbite Series is comprised of three races:  The Argosy Rose Bowl, the Donald D. Summerville Memorial Race and the Boswell Trophy Race.  These offshore races offer LORC participates the opportunity to complete some good distance sailing before the boats are hauled for the season.

This year, LORC will be awarding trophies for overall performance in this three race series.  As well, each host club will continue to award their own trophies as they have done in the past.  The 2008 LORC Frostbite Races and Schedule are outlined below.

Friday, September 12th :  The Argosy Rose Bowl

Host: The National Yacht Club

This year’s Argosy Rose Bowl is a 90 mile overnight race.  The race will start at the Duffern Buoy, proceed across the Lake to the Niagara Buoy R2, then back across the Lake to the Government Offshore Mark MV4 at Oshawa, then on to the Gilbraltor Point Light Buoy TE 18 and then finish back at the T Duffern Mark.  Please note that all of these marks are fixed government marks.

Saturday, September 20th: The Donald D. Summerville Memorial Race

Host: Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club

This offshore race averages a distance of some 17 nm using both existing Government Marks as well as a set mark.  There are three possible courses, 2 offshore and one inshore, to be used and the selection will be based on wind and weather conditions.  The course has the ability to be shortened and has a finish time of 1800 hours.

Sunday, October 5th:  The Boswell Trophy Race

Host:  The Royal Canadian Yacht Club

This offshore race averages a distance of some 25 nm using both existing Government Marks as well as a set mark.  There are three possible courses to be used and the selection will be based on wind and weather conditions.  The course has the ability to be shortened and has a finish time of 1800 hours.

We hope that you will make the most of the Fall Winds and participate in these distance races.  Any additional information will be posted as it becomes available.

 Good Luck and Enjoy!
